BMW adds to the X-series family
The X4 has 306bhp, taking it from 0-100kph in just 5.5 seconds – not bad for an SUV.Damien Reid October 5, 2014
BMW has released another variant to its popular and growing X-series family of SUVs with the launch of the X4. Looking like a junior burger version of the X6, it’s based on the technical blueprint of the BMW X3, although with its unique styling, it displays a sporting character of its own.
Featuring BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive and a spread of standard equipment such as variable sports steering, performance control and a sports leather steering wheel with gearshift paddles, it’s aimed at the youth market as a stepping stone into its larger X6 variant.
Externally, large air intakes positioned on the outer edges of the front end along with the signature BMW twin headlights and front fog lamps define its presence on the road from front on, while its swooping roofline, which reaches its peak above the front seat occupants before dropping rakishly down to the trailing edge of the tailgate, mimics the design of a classical sporting coupé.
The driver and front passenger sit 20 millimetres lower than in the BMW X3. In conjunction with the two-seat look of the rear and the coupé character of the X4’s profile, BMW says that rear seat passengers still enjoy generous levels of space for three across the back.
Power in the X4 xDrive35i comes from a 306bhp, twin scroll, turbocharged, three-litre, inline six-cylinder engine that develops 400Nm of torque, which BMW claims can take it to 100kmh in 5.5 seconds as it continues on its way towards 250kmh at the top end.
Interestingly, it’s the diesel engine that is the most powerful of the X4 range, with the xDrive35d developing 313bhp and 630Nm of torque, allowing it to get to 100kmh in 5.2 seconds. Sadly though, given the region’s disdain for diesel-fuelled cars, this is not likely to be available in most parts of the Middle East.
BMW‘s familiar ConnectedDrive now includes a full-colour, Head-Up Display, along with anti-dazzle High Beam Assistant, Driving Assistant Plus including Lane Departure Warning and Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function.
