Going topless: EDGAR’s top 5 convertible cars of 2014
Drop the roof, push the pedal to the metal and feel the wind in your hair: here are the best convertibles of the year.EDGAR staff December 22, 2014
Here at EDGAR, there's something we find particularly alluring about convertibles.
It's not the practical aspect of them having no blind spots, or the fact that they have unlimited headroom. And it's certainly not the impracticality of us only being able to drive them with the top down during the cooler months of the year for fear of getting scorched by the hot summer sun.
What we really like about convertible cars is that feeling of freedom that comes with dropping the roof and putting the pedal to the metal. Oh, and in the case of these five beautiful examples, the stunning good looks, too.
Here are our top five convertibles of the year:
Bentley Continental GT Speed
Powered by a fabulous twin-turbo 6.0-litre W12 that churns out an astonishing 616bhp at 6,000rpm, the beastly Bentley is a monster of a convertible that's perfect for effortless cruising.
It might not have the agility of some of the other entrants in this list, but with a top speed of 325kph and a mammoth 800Nm of torque spread across all four wheels, this thing eats up the miles with consummate ease. Details: visit bentleymotors.com
Ferrari California Turbo It might technically be only an entry-level Ferrari, and of course we know it's not going to be able to trump the epic LaFerrari for speed, but in terms of pure driving enjoyment, the California is hard to beat.
The car is powered by a new 3.9-litre bi-turbo V8 that produces 552 horsepower at 7,500rpm. It can complete the 0-100kmh run in just 3.6 seconds and then goes on to reach a top speed of 315kmh. Details: visit ferrari.com
Jaguar F-Type V8 S Gaining its power from a 488bhp, 5-litre V8 engine, the Jag takes just 4.3 seconds to reach 100kmh from standstill and has an electronically governed top speed of 300kmh, driving through an eight-speed auto transmission.
The stats are certainly impressive, but what we love most about the F-Type V8 S is that it takes Jaguar back to what it does best: awesome sportscars. Read our full review here. Details: visit jaguar-me.com
Ford Mustang Convertible Available in three engine options (four-cylinder turbo, V6 or honking great V8), there's a version of the brand new Ford Mustang for everyone.
The great thing about a Mustang is that you know exactly what you're going to get. It comes with no aires or graces, it's just good, clean all-American fun. Details: visit ford.com
Porsche 918 Spyder (also main image) In terms of performance and exclusivity, there really is no competition as to the number one convertible of the year, and that, of course, is the stunning Porsche 918 Spyder.
The astonishing Porsche is powered by a 4.6-litre V8 producing 608bhp at 8,500rpm and 528Nm of torque, plus two supplementary electric motors delivering an additional 279bhp. Just 918 examples of this amazing hyper car were made. Details: visit porsche.com
