With the new Range Rover SVAutobiography, passengers can sit on the OUTSIDE!

When EDGAR sent its motoring man Damien Reid to the launch of the 2016 Range Rover SVAutobiography in New York, his first reaction – after rolling his eyes at yet another long-haul flight assignment – was to wonder why exactly Range Rover would choose the Big Apple, a hive of red bricked-buildings and sky-scrapers, to launch it’s brand new SUV.

However, as soon as he laid eyes on it he quickly realised – this car is more Park Avenue limousine than desert dune basher, and the smooth tarmac streets of the city is undoubtedly where it will feel most at home.

The car still has plenty of grunt, with a 542bhp, supercharged 5-litre V8 paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission ensuring it can handle the rigours of off-the-beaten-track driving comfortably and quickly, but it is inside where the SVAutobiography takes your attention.

Much of the driver’s switchgear and rotary controls are machined from solid aluminium with knurled accents, and this detailing continues through to both the front and rear centre consoles with distinctive materials for the cup holder and socket covers.

Rear-seat passengers relax in luxurious seating complete with a chiller compartment and powered deployable tables. Solid aluminium coat hooks are incorporated into the rear pillars while, on the floor, aluminium seat rail finishers and deep twist pile mohair carpet mats complete the feeling of luxury.

There are is raft of impressive features, smart technology and sumptuous materials to be found in the cabin, but the real headline is the car’s special external seating, which has been handcrafted from Windsor leather and has a highly durable aluminium frame – perfect for those afternoons at the polo.

And as for the price? Soccer moms around the world can expect to pay north of $200,000 when it goes on sale later this summer.
