Dakar Rally: amazing photos from this year's raid

Our shortlist of the most spectacular images from this year's Dakar.

January 16, 2017

One of the toughest and most extreme sporting events on the planet ended on Saturday, though you probably wouldn’t know it due to the lack of mainstream media attention.

The Dakar Rally is an annual rally raid open to both amateur and professional racers. It is an off-road endurance event that includes four classes – motorcycles, quads, cars and trucks.

This year’s 38th edition saw raiders begin in Paraguay before racing through Bolivia and into Argentina. Some sections of the rally were over 400 kilometres long and six days were spent 3,000 metres above sea level. It’s brutally tough on both the raiders and their vehicles.

This year British rider Sam Sunderland, who is based in Dubai, won the whole thing on his KTM motorbike. He came home 32 minutes ahead of his nearest competitor.

We’ve looked back at some of the photographs taken during the rally, and have shortlisted these stunning shots as the best of the bunch.
