Ben Eine brings his unmistakable street style to the UAE
One of the world’s most famous street artists has already left his mark in Abu Dhabi, and now looks to do the same in Dubai.Neil Churchill March 15, 2015
In many parts of the world graffiti is seen as a crime. You certainly don't see much of it around the UAE. But when as an artist you've transcended the popular form of street art to a level where the president of the United States has one of your works hanging up in his home, then it's unlikely you're going to be slammed up for spraying a few walls.
That's the level of street art stardom Ben Eine has reached, and he's now brought his unmistakable style to the UAE.
Eine, real name Ben Flynn, is one of the UK's most prolific street artists, with a number of his distinctive murals scattered throughout London, as well as in Los Angeles, Mexico City, Miami, Paris, Dublin, Tokyo, Stockholm and his current home in San Francisco.
Having already added Abu Dhabi to that list last week, he will soon create a mural in English and Arabic in Dubai, as part of an educational program with Zayed University, with students assisting him in the creation of the wall. Eine will also be launching his first exhibit in the region this week at Artspace Dubai in DIFC, titled 'Hand in Hand'. A friend to Banksy, Faile and other reknown street artists, Ben Eine's style is one of the most distinctive and recognisable in the creative world. His big, bold, colourful letters spelling out a word or sentence are crafted from stylised fonts, with a heavy dose of serif.
His work, which started off on shopfront shutters and public walls, now appears in renowned museums around the world such as the UK's Lowry Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. In 2012, Eine's style was recognised by the fashion world when luxury brand Louis Vuitton commissioned him to create a limited edition silk scarf, featuring his signature letters.
Eine's breakthrough mainstream moment though came when British prime minister David Cameron presented US president Barack Obama with one of his works as a gift. The piece was titled 'Twenty First Century City', and immediately thrust Eine into the limelight giving him global recognition.
As the below images show, it's not hard to see why his style has become so popular. Ben Eine's Dubai exhibit takes place from March 16 at Artspace Dubai, DIFC, Gate Village building 3.
