The best indoor film nights in the UAE this summer

The best places to watch a classic movie while sipping on a cocktail.

Neil Churchill August 17, 2015

Film evenings or cinema nights – call them what you will, the number of UAE bars and restaurants offering such a service has risen rapidly this year.

But, as with most things, the summer heat has almost killed off the trend – most of the popup cinemas were outdoor, of course.

However, there are still a few venues in the UAE offering indoor cinema nights this month, as well as some tasty drinks and food on the side.

If you’re looking for somewhere to watch a classic film with the comfort of your own sofa, but the service of your favourite venue, these are the places to head to.

In Dubai...

The wholesome and organic food venue in JBR is pulling out all the stops for its Tribeca Movie Mondays. Each week the Kitchen + Lounge will pay homage to some of the most iconic films of all time.

Launching tonight with the classic Pulp Fiction, the AED 50 entry fee includes a glass of organic wine/house beer or spirit, a bag of organic popcorn and your own Bluetooth headset, so you never miss a line.

17th August – Pulp Fiction

24th August – Wall Street

31st August – Zoolander

7th September – Back to the Future, Part 1

14th September – Rocky IV

In Abu Dhabi…

Iris, Yas Island

Yas Island’s trendy Iris bar, with its mix of comfort and minimalism, is shielding its guests from the outdoor heat with indoor movie nights this month – the first one being tomorrow evening. Not for those who get scared easily, tomorrow Iris will screen the original Psycho

There have been several remakes since, but Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 original is still one of the scariest films of all time.

18th August – Psycho

25th August – Metropolis

1st September - The Apartment

8th September - Breakfast at Tiffany's

15th September - Lawrence of Arabia

22nd September - Forrest Gump

Cipriani, Yas Marina

Staying true to its cuisine, the brilliant Cipriani restaurant is staging several Italian themed films throughout August, paired with a special menu tailored to the film of the evening.

‘Cipriani Cinema’ as they’re calling it, began at the start of the month and has two weeks left to run. If you haven’t been yet then you’ve missed the classics Big Night and Nine. But, with two films left to show, you can still experience some fine Italian cuisine while watching a classico.

22th August – Dinner Rush

29th August – Goodfellas

Screenings start at 8pm, and the optional set menu is AED 350 per person. The normal a la carte is also available. Visit or call 02 6575400.

Until summer is over and the heat has subsided, that’s it as far as indoor film nights go. However, once the UAE has some cooler temperatures again, a whole reel of venues will be launching their bespoke cinema evenings.

After summer in Abu Dhabi...

The golf clubs are the venues to be at for a good film night. Saadiyat Beach Golf Club is expected to return with its movie and barbeque nights every Thursday. With an outdoor screen, starting from 5.30pm, what better way to enjoy a film than with a BBQ on the side.

While Abu Dhabi Golf Club will relaunch its Thursdays Floating Films on September 17. Every Thursday from 6pm, float in the pool while watching a classic film, with food and drinks on offer at the pool bar.

After summer in Dubai...

Reform Social & Grill will return with its popular outdoor movie nights from October. Be prepared for some classic films to go with the Pimms Menu, popcorn and beef hotdogs.

The line up includes: Gremlins, Bettlejuice, Lost Boys, Skyfall, The King’s Speech and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. December of course will be all about the Christmas films. Every Tuesday, screenings start at 8pm. Visit

Claw BBQ in Souk al Bahar will be returning after its initial success earlier in the year, showing classic and eclectic films from the ‘80s and ‘90s every fortnight. With a menu altered each time to match the film on show, head to Downtown Dubai’s favourite barbeque shack every other Wednesday for a Hollywood classic.
