Superheroes abound - what to see at Comic Con
From graffiti by SEEN to Montegrappa pens and local photos of superheroes, here’s what not to miss at MEFCC.Neil Churchill April 9, 2015
It's Comic Con this weekend in Dubai, or to give it its full name, Middle East Film & Comic Con, and there's a number of reasons it will appeal to you more than you realise.
Firstly, we've already told you about the three international cosplay girls that will be there. They should be reason enough. But in case you need another justification for making the trip to Dubai World Trade Centre, then how about some awesome artwork.
Firstly the 'Godfather of graffiti' SEEN will have some of his iconic work on show, including Marvel's backbone of Iron Man, Thor and Hulk.
If that's not your thing then how about some one-of-a-kind Italian superhero pens? Luxury brand Montegrappa will be there to debut its DC Comics Heroes & Villains collection of writing instruments, featuring Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman and the Green Lantern; and four villains: The Joker, Catwoman, the Penguin and the Riddler. If you're a graphic novel fan with a penchant for some of the world's finest writing tools, then this is going to be your heaven. But it is the following series of photographs that we are really excited about seeing. The below (and main image) are a set of portraits snapped by local photographer Martin Beck of well-known superheroes in some not so well-known moments.
The 'We can be Heroes' collection was shot around the UAE with noticeable locations including the Deira Creek, Umm Seqeim beach and the rooftop of Al Kazim Towers in Internet City. The gritty and rather humorous artwork offers a unique take on the life of a superhero, with limited edition prints of the 20 portraits available to purchase.
Now, tell us Comic Con doesn't appeal to you this weekend... To see more of Martin's work visit martinbeckphotography.com
