Tree-trunk furniture by Jae-Hyo Lee
This South Korean artist turns discarded pieces of wood into stunning sculptures.EDGAR staff August 24, 2015
It is hard to believe when you look at Jae-Hyo Lee's beautifully crafted furniture that it started life as an unloved piece of discarded wood.
Lee achieves the stunning effect by burning old tree stumps until they turn black and then embedding discs of fresh wood into them, before polishing them to create the desired shape and finish.
The result is a visually striking contrast between the dark burnt wood and the new lighter wood, all finished with the gleam and precision a master carpenter would be proud of.
The talented South Korean produces a mix of abstract artwork and functional furniture such as chairs, tables, benches and stools.
Unfortunately we don't quite have the outside space here at EDGAR towers for the piece above, but one of Lee's chairs would fit into the office perfectly.
