"Design is part of Dubai's DNA"

Design Days director Cryil Zammit recaps five years of success for the region's pioneering design event.

March 17, 2016

Welcome to the fifth edition of Design Days Dubai. This is a thrilling chapter for the fair as we ready ourselves to present to you the strongest representation of design in the Middle East, in particular of the Gulf region.

It has been a fantastic five-year journey to reach this point. Back in 2011, we were the first design event in Dubai, the first collectible design fair in the Middle East and South Asia and the world’s most diverse design event.

We are fortunate to retain this position and owe much to the extraordinary support of the authorities of Dubai, first and foremost Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, as well as our faithful sponsors, Van Cleef & Arpels, Emaar and Audi, who have remained with us since our first edition.

What I cherish most is witnessing the incredible energy Design Days Dubai has created for the local design scene, generating initiatives, ideas, talent and recently seeing the launch of the Dubai Design District (d3).

Our format is unique with our strong focus on contemporary design, our wish to showcase fresh and emerging talents alongside the best of the world-renowned design galleries.

To celebrate our five years, we present WASL, the most comprehensive exhibition of UAE-based design talents. ‘Wasl’ is also Dubai’s original name, meaning “connections”, a factor that has been key to the city’s success.

Design is now totally part of Dubai’s DNA and it is with even more excitement that I am looking ahead. Together with Downtown Design and Dubai Design Week, we have created a tangible change in the perception of design.

From an artistic point of view at Design Days Dubai to a city-wide public celebration in October; and as fair of discoveries, we have offered new regional and international talents a great platform to show their work to the world.

Design Days Dubai has been pioneering for design in the region for five years now and we look forward to welcoming you to our biggest, most diverse edition with over 750 purchasable design works on display from over 35 countries.
