10 Dubai restaurants you must visit before May 24
Our pick of the places not to miss during Jumeirah Restaurant WeekNeil Churchill May 13, 2015
How much do you think it costs to eat a delicious three-course meal designed by a three-time Michelin-starred chef in Dubai's flagship restaurant? A lot, right? Well yes, you are certainly correct.
However starting tomorrow for 10 days only, you can eat at some of Dubai's top restaurants for seriously reduced prices. That flagship restaurant with a menu created by a three-time Michelin-starred chef - yours for just AED 370. May 14 is the start of Jumeirah Restaurant Week (JRW) when the Dubai-based hospitality group's restaurants, bars and cafes slash their prices dramatically across 42 venues, with set menus offered at a fraction of the normal price.
There are some cheap and cheerful venues to check out, such as the British pub Dhow & Anchor at Jumeirah Beach Hotel, offering a set menu of just AED 95! But it is the opportunity to eat at some of Dubai's best fine-dining restaurants that makes JRW one of the emirate's most exciting culinary periods. Here is our choice of the 10 best restaurants to try, but hurry with your bookings as places go quickly.
Price tier: AED 370
Where: Al Qasr hotel For: Ultra-romantic dinner for two
The Jumeirah Group's flagship restaurant, often rated as one of the most romantic restaurants in the world, Pierchic is our recommended must-try restaurant this JRW. The luxurious seafood joint went through refurbishment at the end of last year, with two new over-water pods on the pier itself. It's also recently had a menu overhaul with Laurent Gras, chef of three-Michelin starred restaurant L2O in Chicago, partnering with Pierchic's head chef Rosalind Parsk. If you only go to one restaurant this JRW, make it this one. Junsui
Where: Burj Al Arab For: Small groups, families
We wouldn't normally recommend a buffet for our readers, but when it's in the Burj Al Arab we're happy to make the exception (that goes for the restaurant below too). Junsui is the flagship hotel's Far East Asian restaurant, and is one of the most opulent settings you'll find. No less than 45 chefs oversee the 12 live cooking stations, with options of Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Indonesian and Korean dishes. Al Iwan
Where: Burj Al Arab For: Parents, dinner for two
It wouldn't be a culinary experience in the Middle East if there wasn't an Arabic restaurant on offer. Al Iwan - 'The Royal Hall' in native tongue - is as high-end as you get in Dubai. Set in the heart of the seven-star hotel's atrium, with golden columns, oud aromas and a view out to sea, Al Iwan offers a local dining experience like no other.
Price tier: AED 180
Where: Jumeirah Beach Hotel For: Dinner for two, clients
Often found near the top of polls of Dubai's best steakhouses - including ours - it's laughable that you can eat at La Parrilla for just AED 180. The fantastic Argentinean eatery may not have its fillet or sirloin cuts on the set menu, but that won't take away from what is one of Dubai's best restaurants. Sat on the 25th floor of the Jumeirah Beach Hotel with stunning views of the Jumeirah district, expect Latin entertainment to go with your choice of South American wine. Pai Thai
Where: Dar Al Masyaf Hotel For: Small groups
One of Dubai's best yet somewhat unknown Thai restaurants, Pai Thai offers authentic Thai food in a quiet and serene setting. After arriving by abra through Jumeirah Madinat's snaking waterways, bag a table outside to soak in the relaxed atmosphere. Don't be surprised if some traditional Thai music and dancing takes place around the tables. Segreto
Where: Souk Madinat For: Dinner for two, romance
After making our list of Dubai's best Italian restaurants, of course we're going to recommend you go to Segreto - for just AED 180, you'd be foolish not to. Inside is rustic calmness but try to secure a table on the softly lit rooftop bar or alongside the waterside terrace. The menu is varied from wagyu beef bresaola to Mediterranean sea bass to porcini mushroom tagliatelle, so whoever you take should be catered for. In fact, we'd recommend this as a first-date venue. Alta Badia
Where: Jumeirah Emirates Towers For: Clients, business deals
We may never cease to be amazed at how few people are aware of Alta Badia. The restaurant on the 50th floor of Jumeirah Emirates Towers and the bar one floor above offer some of the most far-reaching panoramic views in the emirate. The Italian restaurant offers classic dishes with modern twists, although the atmosphere and decor are more business than relaxed. If you're looking to impress a potential client during JRW, this is the place to go. The Rib Room x2
Where: Jumeirah Emirates Towers & Zabeel Saray Hotel For: Dinner for two, small groups
To many, The Rib Room is Dubai's longstanding best steakhouse and with two venues to choose from, if you've never been then now is as good a time as any. The multi-award winning option at Jumeirah Emirates Towers is a classic. Dark wood panelling, cow-print seats and contemporary art make it one of Dubai's coolest restaurants. The set menus differ between the two, with the ET option offering a more traditional smorgasbord of meat, while the Zabeel Saray venue has a more contemporary mix. The Ivy
Where: Jumeirah Emirates Towers For: Clients, groups
The famous British restaurant is route one for businessmen looking to wine and dine a client or colleague. With its iconic dark wood interiors and emerald green windows, crisp white table clothes and heavy wooden chairs, The Ivy is a classic setting for a simple meal done very well. At ground level of Jumeirah Emirates Towers, you're not the only one thinking it's a great place to woo your boss. Rivington Grill
Where: Souk al Bahar For: Everything and everyone
Quite simply, if you've never eaten at Rivington Grill then you can't consider yourself a real Dubai foodie. If you're still feeling down that its original location at Souk Madinat has closed - as we are - eating at its Souk al Bahar venue with its stunning views of the Burj Khalifa and it's musical fountains is the cure. The perfect place to entertain and amaze visitors, even if you've eaten at this British restaurant a hundred times before, you can't turn down going back for just AED 180. There will also be four wine packages available at all restaurants during JRW. For bookings go to jumeirahrestaurantweek.com
