New Audi R8 LMX Equipped With Lasers
May 11, 2014
If there’s one trick James Bond’s gadget-heavy cars never had up their collective sleeve, it was front facing lasers.
Sure he had machine guns, oil slicks and the brilliantly amusing ejector seat, but headlamps equipped with laser high beams? Q missed a trick it seems.
So maybe in the next Bond film Daniel Craig’s car of choice will be Audi’s new limited edition coupe – the R8 LMX.
Not only does the car pack a 5.2-litre, V10 engine producing 570 horsepower and capable of going from 0-100 km/h in 3.4 seconds, it is also the first production model in the world to come equipped with laser high beams. (BMW’s i8 has them as an option.)
With a starting price of €210,000 – AED 1.06 million – the LMX will be limited to 99 models when it debuts this summer.
The new beams generate a cone of light with twice the range of an all-LED headlight, which Audi says will help the driver to recognise contrast more easily, improve visibility and safety and prevent fatigue. Put simply, they will annihilate darkness.
The German manufacturer plans to test the combination of LED and laser high beams for the first time on the new Audi R18 e tron quattro at Le Mans 24 Hours race in June.
The LMX comes in Audi’s customised paint finish Ara Blue crystal effect with the front air inlet grilles and outlette grille at the rear in titanium grey. The sport exhaust system has high-gloss black tailpipes. It also has exclusive designer 19-inch wheels with carbon-fibre ceramic brake discs and red anodized brake callipers.
