Order the man's detox, chased by a cocktail

The spa

With simple, cream-coloured walls and light wooden interiors, the recently re-opened Spa at the Ritz-Carlton Dubai on JBR is a refreshing contrast to the usual dark and sentual Balinesian or Thai spa options. While, there are a few hints of Eastern influneces dotted around the interiors (throw cushions, oil lamps etc.), it is an sense of European modernity that underpins the spa and creates a sense of clinical calm. Starting in the large, well-stocked men’s changing room the interior decends into somewhat of a maze, with corridors darting of to nine multipurpose treatment rooms; three private rooms, each with its own terrace; separate relaxation lounges for men and women; and a dedicated “hammam” area. The changing room also has two indoor plunge pools (one hot, one cold) as well as an outdoor lap pool and gym.

The treatment

In order to make sense of the 50 different treatment options, the spa has divided the menu into four managable sections: Relax and de-stress; Rejuvenate and repair; Detox and cleanse; Energise and awaken. Perhaps what is most impressive is that the spa encourages its guests to have a pre-treatment consultation so specialists can recommend specific treatments based on what would suit the guest best. ritzcarltonspa1 Playing to our alpha-male tendencies we were perscribed the appropiately named Man’s Detox, Re-tox Experience – an hour and a half treatment, which includes a facial and a detoxifying aroma massage followed by a “re-toxifying” cocktail made by the resort’s top barman. As much as the rest of the spa is bright and modern, the small private treatment rooms are cozy and dimly lit. Full disclosure, we might have dozed off a couple of times during the massage. We put the blame entirely on the calming atmosphere and the aromatic oils. The re-toxification side of things consisted of a selection of teas and vitamin-heavy juices and a detailed debriefing from the masseuse who explained particularily stressed areas that we should concentrate more on in the future. We were also told to spend 10 minutes in the steam room and warm plunge pool to maximise the effects of the treatment. Details: Detox-Retox, AED 660 for 90 minutes. For more visit ritzcarlton.com
