The most powerful Mercedes S-Class is all about the numbers
July 16, 2014
A new car can be about many things. But we love it when a car is about the numbers, and the new S65 AMG coupé is certainly that.
The gorgeous new two-door from Mercedes-Benz is the most powerful version in the S-class range, and with the following statistics that's not surprising.
A 6.0-litre V12 engine. Two turbos. 630 horsepower. 738lb ft - or 1,000 Nm - of torque. 0-100km/h in four seconds. Top speed of 250km/h.
If you buy one of these, it's probably wise to store it in the midst of Germany's unrestricted autobahns.
The incredible power stats aside, as part of the S-Class family it's not surprising that the S65 AMG coupé has some of the latest and most astonishing technology features of any car on the market.
One of the highlights is something called 'curve tilting' which reads the road ahead and adjusts the suspension height on all four wheels, allowing the car to lean into the corner, giving greater comfort when cornering at speed. Another is 'magic body control' which spots bumps on uneven road surfaces, and adjusts the suspension accordingly.
Inside you get AMG sports seats designed for long-distance comfort, a new three-spoke steering wheel, a heads-up display, touchpad to control most of the car's functions and a lot of leather.
The car stops thanks to huge composite brakes - ceramics are an option - while there's a new front end splitter and twin exhaust pipes on the back. It uses a seven-speed AMG automatic gearbox which comes in three modes - efficiency, sport and manual - and sits on 20-inch alloy wheels.
See, back to the numbers again.
