Watch The World Cup Like A King At These 9 PlacesJune 8, 2014
Frevo Where: Fairmont The Palm
Given Brazil is the host country for this year’s biggest sporting event, it would be wrong not to include an authentic Brazilian churrascaria in our lineup; and you won’t find one much better than Frevo. Expect Brazilian food – bite-sized Pichanha steak and fried calamari – and Caipirinha cocktails aplenty. This restaurant has a lively atmosphere at the quietest of times, so it should be rocking to a Samba beat when the football starts.
Reform Social & Grill (below) Where: the Lakes community
Since it's opening late last year Reform Social & Grill has been something of a revolution to The Lakes community. Several screens inside will be showing the World Cup as well as the outside cinema screen with its usual big white sofas in the front row - we suggest you book these well in advance. If what you're after is top notch gastropub food while you watch the footy, you've found your place.
Above Rooftop Lounge Where: Sofitel Downtown Dubai
As the most recent opening on this list - it actually opens on the 20th, a quarter way through the tournament - Above Rooftop Lounge will likely have the smallest attendance for the games, but we view that as a good thing. Not only are you guaranteed uninterrupted viewing of the screens, but situated on the 8th floor of the newly opened Sofitel hotel in Downtown, you have that little tower called the Burj Khalifa as a backdrop.
Cave (below) Where: Conrad
We think Cave should change its name to Man Cave for the summer, as that's essentially what it will become. The Conrad hotel venue is transforming its popular meat-cheese-wine venue into a living room with lounge furniture and bean bags as well as a big screen. The head chef has created a World Cup special à la carte menu, and Cave's beds will have their own private screen.
Velocity Where: JW Marriott Marquis
As clean-cut a sports bar as you're likely to find, Velocity's multiple big screens normally allow you to watch several sports at the same time. This summer, that should translate to multiple World Cup games simultaneously. Good food, a separate upstairs smoking area and a lively atmosphere will make this one of the most popular places to watch the summer's football in style.
Voda Bar (below) Where: Jumeirah Zabeel Saray
There's the prawn sandwich brigade, and then there's those who go to Voda to watch the football. If what you're after is the ultimate chic bar to enjoy the World Cup this summer, look no further. Just don't expect the celebrations to be too wild when there's a goal.
Roof Top Lounge Where: One&Only Royal Mirage, Arabian Court
If - for some unknown reason - you want to take a woman on a first date to watch the football, this is probably your best chance of the night not being a complete disaster. If it is however, you have a good recovery options with the Roof Top Terrace above and the brilliant Nina restaurant next door. However, if you manage to convince her that Japan vs Greece is a match she needs to see, then the comfy furniture and pool tables will also go down well.
Rush (below) Where: Yas Viceroy
If you yourself are Brazilian, then you're probably going to choose Rush as your venue of choice for the entirety of the World Cup. Why? Because the Yas Viceroy bar is offering Brazilian nationals 20% off their drinks. For everyone else who is unfortunate enough not to have been born Brazilian, hope for regular goal-fests as there's a drinks promo every time the ball hits the back of the net.
Beach tent Where: Fairmont Bab Al Bahr
When it comes to watching sport in the UAE's summer months, we do love a beach tent. Fairmont Bab Al Bahr's version of this is more of a tech-hub gazebo, with four big projectors and 12 LED screens, as well as a live DJ. Our advice is to get there early and enjoy the pool before the action kicks off.
Saadiyat Beach Golf Club (below) Where: Saadiyat Island
The danger with going to Saadiyat Beach Golf Club is the likelihood you'll be distracted by the immaculate course and end up playing a round of 18. But, once you've done that, you'll get to enjoy the club's World Cup marquee and huge screen showing the games. Just don't shout "get in the hole!" World Cup fixtures: fifa.com/worldcup/matches
