Where and how to party at the Abu Dhabi F1

November 13, 2014

This time next week the world’s biggest, fastest and most glamorous sport will have rolled into town and the sound of champagne bottles popping on superyachts will only be drowned out by screeching rubber on racing asphalt. We are of course talking about the Abu Dhabi GP at Yas Marina Circuit, the final race in the 2014 Formula 1 calendar. While EDGAR’s focus will be on the track during sunlight hours, F1 is of course about so much more than the racing, something that Abu Dhabi this year is demonstrating to good effect. There are no fewer than 15 after race parties or concerts of some kind over the weekend, including a few of the biggest names in the music industry. Here are our recommendations of where to be seen: After race concerts As much as the Abu Dhabi GP has made its name for some great on track racing, it’s the after race parties that have helped seal the event’s popularity with residents. Some of the biggest names in the music industry have taken to the du Arena stage on race weekends, and this year is no exception. Abu Dhabi f1 after race concerts Pharrell. Friday 21st welcomes world-famous DJ Armin Van Buuren; Saturday sees Pharrell Williams hit the stage and none other than iconic rock band The Who close things off on Sunday. Entrance comes included with day tickets to the racing. Visit thinkflash.ae. The Podium Lounge After its successful Abu Dhabi debut last year, it’s no surprise to see The Podium Lounge is back once again. Having already appeared in Melbourne, Monaco and Singapore this season, the party night is bringing some big names to the Yas Viceroy’s rooftop next weekend. Smookingroove will perform on Thursday night, Sister Bliss on the Friday, Dirty Vegas on Saturday with Rudimental ending the weekend in style on Sunday. Entry starts from AED 350. VIP tables start from AED 6,000. Visit podiumlounge.com. Abu Dhabi the podium lounge. VIP Room Seasoned F1 revellers will know that each year a Dubai-based nightclub pops up somewhere in the vicinity of Yas Island, becomes a party venue for the weekend and then just like that, is gone and back in Dubai as if it never left. This year, that club is VIP Room. The Radisson Blue Hotel will play host to the venue usually found in the JW Marriott Marquis, with US hip-hop artist Future on Friday playing on – yes, the Friday – followed by French Montana on Saturday. Sunday is left reserved for founder Jean-Roch to host a celebrity bash, and given last year saw Ludacris, Sean Kingston and Timbaland make appearances, you can be sure this party will have some big names too. Incredibly, the VIP area has free entry and is situated right in the heart of Yas Marina. No prizes for guessing what brand of the fizzy stuff will be served on tap. Burlesque If you’re not so concerned about celebrity sightings and just want to party as hard – and as big – as you can, then Burlesque answers your prayers. Located in the Yas Viceroy, the glamorous club will be hosting its live band throughout the weekend, performing a mix jazz, blues and rock. If you’re still lingering on the dance floor long after that stops, Ibiza DJs Tom Pool and David Moreno take to their sets until the early hours of the morning. Visit burlesqueuae.com. House duo Audiofly kicks things off on the Thursday night at the Yas Marina venue, before a chill out day on Friday with live music sessions. The evening comes alive again from 11pm when Blue Marlin’s resident band Mash Machine takes to the stage, but there’s a change of atmosphere on Saturday when WHITE Dubai pops up at the venue. Sunday rounds off the weekend with further DJ performances. Visit irisabudhabi.com. Iris Abu Dhabi. Amber Lounge Simply known to all F1 insiders as the place to be of an evening, Amber Lounge only appears in four destinations on the calendar – Monaco, Singapore, Austin and Abu Dhabi. Set in the heart of Yas Marina, the venue’s view of the superyacts and sunset is of course spectacular. If you fancy sipping champagne with one of the drivers, this is your best chance of that happening. Entry price AED 3,600. Tables start from AED 42,000. Visit amber-lounge.com.
