10 ways to be healthier in less than 60 seconds

‘New Year, new you’… It sounds great, but here in the real world, where we still have jobs to do, families to support and bills to pay, a complete health and fitness overhaul is nothing more than a pipedream for most.

But that’s not to say there’s nothing you can do to get a bit healthier for the New Year. In fact, the following tips are so easy you can get them done in less than a minute.

Stir it up
Stir half a teaspoon of turmeric into a glass of warm water and down it. It doesn’t taste great, but it aids digestion, eases bloating and is even thought to reduce the risk of heart disease.

Walk the last leg
Get out of the lift a floor earlier and walk the final flight of stairs. Once you get used to this, take it up a notch and walk two flights.

Balance while brushing
Stand on one leg while brushing your teeth. You might look like a crazy person, but this simple tip will improve your balance and strengthen your core.

An apple a day…
Need something to wake you up in the mornings or beat that after-dinner slump? Ditch the coffee and eat an apple instead. The natural sugars in the apple will give you a short-term boost without the caffeine crash of coffee.

Back to black
If you really can’t kick the coffee habit, make sure you take it black, without sugar and drink no more than two cups per day.

Chew your food properly
Dense foods such as steak and vegetables can take up to 30 chews to properly break down. Failure to break down food can result in indigestion, heartburn and constipation. Plus, it’s bad manners!

The wonders of water
Bored of drinking plain water? Shove a few slices of lemon and cucumber in a bottle and refill throughout the day.

Take 20
The best start to a day is hitting the gym, but if you wake up late and haven’t got time, 20 reps of your favourite exercise – press-ups, sit-ups, star jumps, whatever you like – will at least wake you up and get your body moving for the day

Keep a lid on it
Always shut the toilet lid before you flush. If you don’t, polluted water particles fly out and land all over the bathroom, including on your toothbrush. Unless you want to brush your teeth with toilet water, take a second to shut the lid. 

Mental well-being is just as important as physical. If you’re feeling stressed, stop what you're doing, shut your eyes and take five deep breaths (best not to try this while you're driving).
