How to achieve the Hollywood smile

Dr Apa tells us how to get your pearly whites sparkling like a celebrity's.

July 10, 2014

People are more conscious than ever about how their teeth affect their overall facial beauty. Teeth are the one of the first things people will or will not notice about you. It’s not only when you smile, it’s when you interact.

I think now patients understand that it’s more than just having straight white teeth but having the correct position, shape and colour can have an overall beautifying effect on the face. The best way to maintain a healthy smile is to take care of yourself.

Seeing a dentist regularly, staying on top of your hygiene and taking care of things before they become a problem. The days of “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” are long gone! The idea is to stay ahead of the game, take care of yourself and take care of your smile. Using the right oral hygiene products to help you specifically is of major importance. Most importantly, make sure you’re using an electric toothbrush. It’s 2014, the days of manual toothbrushes are long gone. Make the investment in yourself and your health.

Some of the lengths my patients are going to, to achieve the Hollywood smile, include:

• Aligning their teeth as adults, either with invisalign or braces.
• Bleaching their teeth with in office procedures such as boost or zoom that can dramatically change the colour of your teeth in just one hour.
• Recreating the architecture of their smile with gum grafts that can have an overall age defying effect on those who have receding gums.

Most of my patients achieve the perfect smile with porcelain veneers, crowns or inlays. By utilising porcelain, sometimes in combination with invisalign and or gum grafting, you can recreate the smile you had in your 20s. You can change the shape, colour and overall position of your smile and even affect how the skin around the lower third of the face looks.

You can add support to the lips, cheeks and reduce frown lines if properly diagnosed and executed. Your smile is the window into your body; it tells all about how you take care of the rest of your body.
