Keep it slim: 5 ultra-thin watches for a classy look
For an elegant timepiece that fits under the cuff, these are five of the best.Neil Churchill January 28, 2015
Piaget Altiplano 900P (above)
The undisputed kings of ultra-thin watches, Piaget produced its pièce de résistance last year, the 900P – the world’s thinnest mechanical watch. Piaget achieved the feat of 3.65mm by building the case to function as the main plate for the movement, and the dial to operate as the bridge supporting all the components. Genius.
Jaeger-LeCoultre Grande Reverso Ultra Thin 1948
The reversible case is nothing new, but the 7.3mm thickness is. A more casual alternative to JLC’s Ultra Thin Tribute 1931, this watch has its hand-wound calibre to thank for its streamlined appearance. Just 2.94mm thick, the calibre allows the watch to sit flatter to the caseback, and yes the reversible face still works perfectly.
Breguet Classique Tourbillon Extra Thin
Proof that an ultra-thin watch can still have a lot going on, the Extra Thin Automatic 5377 boasts an 80-hour reserve and high-rate 4Hz tourbillon. With a thickness of 7mm, the ultra-thin automatic tourbillon is a rarity, but that’s hardly a surprise from the company whose founder was the creator of the tourbillon.
Chopard L.U.C. XP Ultra-Slim
A truly classic design, the L.U.C. XP Ultra-Slim is as subtle and elegant a watch as you are likely to find. With a thickness of 6.98mm, beneath the dial beats a mechanical self-winding caliber with a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. It has a 65-hour power reserve, which is achieved through two flattened barrels.
Hublot Classic Fusion Ultra-Thin
The Classico Ultra-Thin Shiny Dial – yes, that’s the official name – harks back to a time when Hublot was a dress watch brand, before it became known for its chunky sports models. The movement – just 2.90mm thick – is manually wound and has a power reserve of 90 hours. Its styling gives it that hard to achieve look in the watch world of both a classic and modern timepiece.
