The smell of sandalwood and lemon that greets you at The Art of Shaving’s new barbershop is a reassuring touch that tells you that you – and your beard – are in good hands.

The barbershop that began life in New York City has opened its first Dubai store with three chairs and a gentlemen’s lounge on the boulevard at City Walk’s second phase.

The light and airy shop is kitted with dark wood cupboards housing all sorts of barbershop paraphernalia.

The 45-minute Royal Shave (AED 240) uses several applications of hot and cold towels, face masks and balms, but EDGAR was in a hurry and so instead opted for the express 30-minute Traditional Shave service at AED 140.

As well as shaving, the shop also offers haircuts (AED 100), facials starting at AED 140, hair colouring (AED 295) and nose/ear waxing from AED 25.

Hichem from Tunisia has been a barber for ten years and is a perfectionist, studying facial contours with a microscopic precision. He applied a warm, lavender-scented warm towel followed by a generous layer of pre-shave oil to help his straight razor glide. Next came warm foam dispensed from a machine that we wish we had at home, after which Hichem went to work.

With our scruff thoroughly removed, stubborn hairs close to the skin were blitzed with an electric razor. Unscented after shave provided the finishing touch to ensure there were no flare ups.
