Paris’ coolest postcode has moved to Dubai in the form of a high-end new department store. Le BHV Marais has opened its French doors at City Walk with two levels of fashion, grooming, gadgets and homeware.

EDGAR got a pre-opening tour and saw a menswear section filled with Hackett, Emporio Armani, Hugo Boss and its casual younger brother Boss Green, Lacoste, Diesel, Calvin Klein underwear and a local label set up by three Iranian brothers named The Emperor.

The first BHV store outside Paris feels urban, contemporary and spacious with 10-metre high ceilings and ceramic tiled floors. It also feels Parisien, a crucial detail for store manager Pascal Abchee (below, left).

In the early 1990s when he was 22 Abchee moved to Paris from Lebanon and lived in a 29 square metre apartment with a bed and TV. His mother visited and, alarmed at his modest accommodation, whisked him to Le BHV department store in Marais.

“It was not a good neighbourhood back then but in the last 20 years Le Marais has become exciting and it’s where people go to eat and relax – it’s the place to be,” says Abchee. “And now I think Le Marais comes to Dubai. This store is a new concept that’s not a traditional mall. It has the DNA of Paris and the modernity of Dubai.”
