Take your holiday cues from footballers

Here’s where to go on holiday if you want to run into Ronaldo, Messi or Ozil.

The European Championships are over and the club leagues don’t start for at least another month. Unless you’re painstakingly following every rumour from the transfer window (which, we suggest you don’t), you’re suffering from football withdrawal symptoms.

The best way to avoid the no football syndrome is to take a holiday. Luckily for us in the UAE, summer comes around the same time as the football lull. So go on, follow some of the world’s best footballers and take a break. You deserve it.

Cristiano Ronaldo

Not letting the pressure get to him, the Portuguese winger went on a short holiday to Ibiza soon after winning the Champions League. Then, after winning his first major tournament with Portugal, Ronaldo jetted back to the party Island with his family before heading to Las Vegas to step into the octagon with Conor McGregor and party with Jennifer Lopez.

Lionel Messi

It would seem that the loss on penalties to Chile at the Copa America final really broke Lionel Messi. First he announced his retirement from international football, and then he went and dyed his hair blonde. Either he’s a real big fan of Justin Bieber or he’s auditioning to become Khaleesi’s body double in the next season of Game of Thrones. Whatever the reasoning, at least he had a great time in Ibiza before his moment of madness.

Gareth Bale

After an adventurous Euro campaign with Wales at the Euros, Bale set off with his girlfriend and their daughter to the Balearic Islands where the former Tottenham winger proposed to long-term girlfriend Emma Rhys-Jones.

The Brazilian winger went straight to Ibiza after a gruelling season before heading to Las Vegas to soak in the sun with Serena Williams and party with Calvin Harris.

Mesut Ozil

The German midfielder put his team’s disappointing Euro campaign behind by holidaying time with teammates Leroy Sane and Emre Can in California.

Alexis Sanchez

The Copa America winner and player of the tournament chose to spend his summer in Florida and even created a video montage to show off to his Instagram followers.

Paul Pogba

While sports websites all over the world will tell you that Paul Pogba has agreed to move to Manchester United every other day, the French midfielder himself prefers to stay away from the hoopla in Miami. Since he’s playing football throughout the year, Pogba’s been brushing up on his basketball skills throughout his holiday.

Antoine Griezmann

Like Pogba, Griezmann chose to head over to America for his holiday. And when he isn’t busy shooting hoops and visiting arcades, Griezmann takes some time out for Pokémon Go.

Robert Lewandowski

While most other household names have flocked to The United States of America, Robert Lewandowski took off to Greece where he enjoyed a kick about with a few kids. Sadly, none of them were interested in football after the striker showed up.

Luka Modric

The forever-humble Croatian preferred to stay in Croatia for his summer break. He even played host to Real Madrid teammate Sergio Ramos for a couple of days.
